Did grain yields in Belarus rise 1.8-fold? What the harvest data actually show

Claim

State media claimed that crop yields in Belarus had risen almost 1.8-fold in 2026 and that the country was nearly level with Lithuania in wheat yields.

Verdict

False and misleading. Operational data from the Belarusian Agriculture Ministry showed an increase of several centners per hectare, not a 1.8-fold rise. The Lithuania comparison also cannot be established from the cited indicator: the Belarusian figure covered grains and pulses during an early stage of the harvest, while the claim referred specifically to wheat.

In brief

• On 15 July 2026, the average grain yield reported in Belarus was 42.9 centners per hectare.

• This was 4.7 centners per hectare higher than on the same date in 2025.

• The previous value was therefore about 38.2 centners per hectare, making the increase about 12.3%, or 1.12-fold.

• By 18 July, the reported average was 42.5 centners per hectare, with an increase of 3.8 centners. Operational estimates change as more fields are harvested.

• These figures cannot automatically be treated as the final wheat yield or used to prove parity with Lithuania.

Why this matters

Confusing an increase "by 1.8 centners" with an increase "1.8-fold" changes the meaning sharply. A 1.8-fold rise means an 80% increase. From a base near 38.2 centners per hectare, that would require about 68.8 centners per hectare. The reported operational figure of 42.9 shows a very different scale.

Such substitutions can create the impression of a dramatic productivity surge and support international comparisons built from incompatible indicators.

What we checked

We compared:

1. the operational harvest update published on 15 July 2026;

2. the 18 July update marking the first million tonnes harvested;

3. Belstat's final statistics for 2025;

4. the Belarusian presidential portal's harvest update of 3 August;

5. Eurostat's methodology for crop area, production and yield indicators;

6. the Belarusian Investigative Center review that documented the original claim.

Evidence

1. An increase in centners is not the same as a multiple

BelTA, citing the Agriculture Ministry, reported an average yield of 42.9 centners per hectare on 15 July. This was 4.7 centners above the value recorded on the same date a year earlier.

Those figures imply a 2025 base of about 38.2 centners per hectare. Dividing 42.9 by 38.2 gives about 1.12. The increase was therefore approximately 12.3%, not 80%.

Three days later, the operational average was 42.5 centners per hectare, 3.8 centners above the comparable date in 2025. The change illustrates why an interim value should not be presented as the final result of the season.

2. The final 2025 yield was 38.2 centners per hectare

Belstat reported that farms of all types harvested 9.1 million tonnes of grain after processing in 2025, with an average yield of 38.2 centners per hectare. This was a final annual indicator, while the July 2026 values were snapshots from an unfinished harvest.

Comparing an interim estimate with a final annual figure requires caution. The mix of crops and regions already harvested changes throughout the campaign.

3. The operational indicator did not cover wheat alone

The harvest updates described grains and pulses. On 3 August, the official presidential portal separately listed winter and spring wheat, triticale, barley and rye among crops whose harvesting was still under way.

A combined average for grains therefore cannot be called the wheat yield without a separate breakdown. A Belarus-Lithuania comparison requires the same crop, unit, period, humidity standard and farm coverage.

4. International comparisons require matching categories

Eurostat collects cultivation area, harvested production and yield separately for more than 100 agricultural products. Yield is expressed in tonnes per hectare and relates to a specified product.

A sound conclusion about Belarus and Lithuania would therefore compare wheat with wheat for the same completed season. A combined operational figure for several grain crops does not show that Belarus had already reached Lithuania's wheat yield.

What remains unknown

The 2026 harvest was not complete by the publication date, so the final grain yield and the separate final wheat yield could still change. The public sources reviewed for this article did not provide a complete, directly comparable set of final 2026 wheat data for both countries.

This does not prevent a verdict on the first part of the claim: the available figures directly contradict a 1.8-fold rise.

Conclusion

The claim of an almost 1.8-fold yield increase resulted from misreading a change expressed in physical units. Operational data for 15 July indicated an increase of about 12.3%, or 1.12-fold. The claim of wheat-yield parity with Lithuania is not demonstrated by a combined interim figure for grains and pulses.
